Sunday Recipe: Green Protein Smoothie

I’ve been gone a conference for the last week. Conferences are odd places, where you eat fast food and drink a ridiculous amount. So, this week, I’m detoxing, focusing on natural fats, lots of veggies, some fruit, and clean protein sources. What better way to start than with a yummy smoothie?

This smoothie tastes like a tropical cake of some sort, since my vanilla whey protein powder tastes like cake mix. It’s stevia-sweetened, so it doesn’t add any sugar to the smoothie, but I’m sure there’s enough going on here that unflavored protein would be good, too. I like whey because it’s rich in branched-chain amino acids and promotes muscle growth, but you can use whatever protein powder you like.

Green Protein Smoothie

110g frozen mango cubes
1 scoop vanilla whey protein (Show Me the Whey brand)
1 Tbsp. ground flaxseed
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/2-1 cup water (if your blender is less awful than mine, you’ll need less water)
30g baby spinach

Blend together everything except the spinach until smooth, and then blend that in until the whole thing is a uniform pale green color. Try this with other fruit or other liquids, if you want. I’m going to try berries tomorrow.

About Kyniska

In ancient Sparta, women were encouraged to train their bodies and minds as warriors did, in preparation for an adult life of strength and intellect. They strove to win a husband through strength as well as beauty. I try to live my life by this philosophy, that athletic ability and accented beauty can co-exist, yielding a richer whole.
